Best Breakfast Grits Bowl

Bowl of Gritzy Buttery grits served with toast, eggs, and fresh fruit on a yellow background

Growing up, mornings meant a quick breakfast, then running out the door. Making a complicated breakfast like grits was not on the table (in more ways than one). The reason? Preparing traditional stone-ground grits was the first step, which meant 30 minutes of stirring a pot on the stove. This recipe solves that dilemma: any breakfast with grits is now possible with our heat-and-eat Gritzy grits. - Rachel, Gritzy Founder

Gritzy's Buttery Ready Grits can make the Best Breakfast Grits Bowl possible. With our Buttery Ready Grits as the base, all you have to do is heat them up and top them with your favorite breakfast proteins and fixings: bacon, eggs, cheese, and a hot sauce if you're feeling spicy.

The best part? No-mess prep means your outfit of the day is safe from the chaos that is grits on the stove. Now back to spending time with your family or tackling the big day ahead, we'll handle breakfast.

What Kind of Grits to Use for Breakfast Grits

There are so many options for a breakfast grits bowl base: stone-ground, instant, quick…the list goes on. But if you grew up in the South, you know that stone-ground is the most premium and tasty option. Stone-ground grits are milled with extra care and maintain all the nutrients of the corn. Our Gritzy ready grits are made with real, stone-ground grits, but they also have the convenience of a 90-second preparation time. This means you don’t have to sacrifice the taste of true stone-ground grits, but you also don’t have to stand at the stove and stir them for 30 minutes.

How to Save Time Cooking Stone-Ground Grits

If you want to save time cooking stone-ground grits, there is really only one option out there: Gritzy’s Ready Grits. Made with real, stone-ground grits, you can heat and eat them right in the pouch in only 90 seconds. Traditional stone-ground grits typically take about 30 minutes to make on the stove, but Gritzy’s new product allows you to make them so much more quickly.

Topping Ideas for Breakfast Grits

I once heard someone say, “Grits taste like whatever you put on them.” That’s the best part about grits - they truly are the perfect base for any topping, especially all the combinations of breakfast toppings. Whether you have a sweet tooth or crave a savory start to your day, grits are the starter you need. Let’s start with our favorite breakfast toppings with this classic take.

Ingredients

  • 2 Pouches of Gritzy Buttery Ready Grits

  • 4 slices bacon, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter

  • 4 large eggs

  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

  • Hot sauce, for topping

  • 2 green onions, sliced thin

Directions

Step 1

In a 1-quart saucepot over medium heat, fry the bacon until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove the bacon and pour off all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon grease.

Step 2

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a nonstick skillet. Add the eggs and fry until the whites are set but the yolks are still soft, 3 to 5 minutes, or longer, depending on how you like your eggs. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 3

Tear open 2 pouches of Gritzy Buttery Ready Grits and heat in the microwave for 90 seconds each. Pour and combine both pouches into 1 bowl.

Step 4

Once the grits are cooked, fold in 1/2 cup of the Cheddar cheese. Stir to allow the cheese to melt into the grits, then season to taste with salt, pepper and hot sauce.

Step 5

Divide the grits between 2 bowls and divide the remaining 1/4 cup Cheddar between them as well. Top each with 2 fried eggs and half of the chopped bacon. Finish with the sliced green onions.

    • Peppers and Onions

    • Cherry Tomatoes, Garlic, and Spinach

    • Cheddar Cheese, Hot Sauce, and Scallions

    • Mushrooms, Parmesan Cheese, and Thyme

How to elevate your Breakfast Grits for the Weekend

While our Gritzy Ready Grits are perfect for any day of the week since they are ready in 90 seconds, they are also perfect for a bigger Saturday or Sunday breakfast when you want to go all out. To elevate your grits for the weekend, you can even make them the main event with lots of toppings or a side dish to pair with pancakes, eggs, Belgian waffles, bacon, sausage, biscuits, or any of our Southern breakfast favorites.

One of my favorite weekend recipes are Grits & Eggs. They are super easy and fast to make, but I always get great reviews from family and friends.

Can I Make Breakfast Grits without Bacon?

Yes! Grits are already naturally a vegetarian option, so you can choose to remove any meats, and they will be a great choice for that dietary restriction or preference. You can mix and match your favorite proteins, vegetables, cheeses, and seasonings.

How can I add a nice Southern kick?

To add a Southern kick to your grits, there are so many options. You can add seasonings directly to the grits and stir them in: seasonings like paprika, cayenne pepper, and Cajun seasoning will do the trick. You can also top your final breakfast bowl with a spicy sauce, like Tabasco sauce, Frank’s Red Hot, or sriracha. Whether it’s in the grits or on top of your favorite proteins, cheeses, and vegetables, adding a little spice is no problem.
